You shall also associate with yourself your kinsmen the tribe of Levi, your ancestral tribe, to be attached to you and to minister to you, while you and your sons under your charge are before the Tent of the Pact.
וְגַ֣ם אֶת־אַחֶ֩יךָ֩ מַטֵּ֨ה לֵוִ֜י שֵׁ֤בֶט אָבִ֙יךָ֙ הַקְרֵ֣ב אִתָּ֔ךְ וְיִלָּו֥וּ עָלֶ֖יךָ וִישָֽׁרְת֑וּךָ וְאַתָּה֙ וּבָנֶ֣יךָ אִתָּ֔ךְ לִפְנֵ֖י אֹ֥הֶל הָעֵדֻֽת׃

וילוו עליך וישרתוך פי' שישרתו אותך בעבודה המיוחדת ללוים היינו בשיר על הדוכן שנקרא בשם שירות כמו שלמדו בערכין (ד' יא) שירה ממ"ש ושרת את אחיו בשם יהוה, וכן שימנו מן הלוים גזברין בארו שא"ל שישרתו אותך בעבודה שעושים הכהנים שהוא השמירה, שהכהנים ג"כ שומרים את המקדש שהרי זה נאמר אח"כ שאמר ושמרו משמרתך, וא"ל שמה שאמר וישרתוך ר"ל כל מיני שירות בין בדברים שהם לעבודת כהנים שישרתו אותם הלוים לסייע להם בין בעבודות המיוחדות ללוים, ולפ"ז נאמר שבעבודת השמירה שהיא ג"כ עבודת כהנים כשהלוים שומרים פטורים הכהנים מלשמור שהרי אמר אח"ז שהלוים הם נתונים ליהוה לא לשרת את הכהנים וא"כ אא"ל שפי' שישרתו את הכהנים להקל מעליהם עבודת כהנים, רק שישרתו בדברים שאין הכהנים יכולים לעשותם, שבזה הם משרתים ליהוה לעשות עבודתו שא"א לעשותם ע"י אחר, וא"כ מ"ש וישרתוך היינו בעבודתם דהיינו בשיר ולהעשות גזברין, ומוסיף ושמרו משמרתך שע"ז לא אמר לשון שירות, שבזה אינם מסייעים לכהנים כי הכהנים צריכים לשמור בג' מקומות תמיד רק הם שומרים בפ"ע בכ"א מקומות והכהנים אין נפטרים בכך כי בזה אין הלוים משרתים את הכהנים רק שומרים בפ"ע וסוגיא דתמיד (דף כו ע"ב) הוא הפך מדברי הספרי:
Rav Yehuda said that Shmuel said: From where is it derived that the basic requirement to accompany communal offerings with song applies by Torah law? As it is stated with regard to a Levite who serves in the Temple: “Then he shall serve with the name of the Lord his God” (Deuteronomy 18:7). What is this service that is performed with the name of God? You must say that this is the song, in which the Levites mention and praise the name of God.
אָמַר רַב יְהוּדָה אָמַר שְׁמוּאֵל: מִנַּיִן לְעִיקַּר שִׁירָה מִן הַתּוֹרָה? שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: ״וְשֵׁרֵת בְּשֵׁם יהוה אֱלֹהָיו״, אֵיזֶהוּ שֵׁירוּת שֶׁבְּשֵׁם? הֱוֵי אוֹמֵר: זֹה שִׁירָה.
Their service was to guard the Temple. Among [the Levities], there were gate-keepers who would open the gates of the Temple and close its doors. And there were singers who would accompany the sacrifices with song each day. [The latter concept is derived from the exegesis of Deuteronomy 18:7]: "And he shall serve in the name of God, his Lord, as all of his Levite brethren." Which service involves [invoking] the name of God? I would say: song.
When were songs recited? At the time that the wine libations [accompanying] all the communal burnt offerings, and the peace offerings brought on Shavuous, were brought. Song was not recited over the freewill burnt offerings that the community would bring for "the dessert of the altar," nor on the wine libations that are brought independently.
עֲבוֹדָה שֶׁלָּהֶן הִיא שֶׁיִּהְיוּ שׁוֹמְרִין אֶת הַמִּקְדָּשׁ. וְיִהְיוּ מֵהֶן שׁוֹעֲרִין לִפְתֹּחַ שַׁעֲרֵי הַמִּקְדָּשׁ וּלְהָגִיף דַּלְתוֹתָיו. וְיִהְיוּ מֵהֶן מְשׁוֹרְרִין לְשׁוֹרֵר עַל הַקָּרְבָּן בְּכָל יוֹם. שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (דברים יח ז) "וְשֵׁרֵת בְּשֵׁם יהוה אֱלֹהָיו כְּכָל אֶחָיו הַלְוִיִּם". אֵי זֶהוּ שֵׁרוּת שֶׁהוּא בְּשֵׁם יהוה הֱוֵי אוֹמֵר זוֹ שִׁירָה. וּמָתַי אוֹמֵר שִׁירָה עַל כָּל עוֹלוֹת הַצִּבּוּר הַחוֹבָה וְעַל שַׁלְמֵי עֲצֶרֶת בְּעֵת נִסּוּךְ הַיַּיִן. אֲבָל עוֹלוֹת נְדָבָה שֶׁמַּקְרִיבִין הַצִּבּוּר לְקַיִץ לַמִּזְבֵּחַ. וְכֵן הַנְּסָכִין הַבָּאִין בִּפְנֵי עַצְמָן. אֵין אוֹמְרִין עֲלֵיהֶן שִׁירָה:
What real value is there for a man
In all the gains he makes beneath the sun?
מַה־יִּתְר֖וֹן לָֽאָדָ֑ם בְּכׇ֨ל־עֲמָל֔וֹ שֶֽׁיַּעֲמֹ֖ל תַּ֥חַת הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃
A river of fire streamed forth before Him;
Thousands upon thousands served Him;
Myriads upon myriads attended Him;
The court sat and the books were opened.
נְהַ֣ר דִּי־נ֗וּר נָגֵ֤ד וְנָפֵק֙ מִן־קֳדָמ֔וֹהִי אֶ֤לֶף (אלפים)[אַלְפִין֙] יְשַׁמְּשׁוּנֵּ֔הּ וְרִבּ֥וֹ (רבון)[רִבְבָ֖ן] קָֽדָמ֣וֹהִי יְקוּמ֑וּן דִּינָ֥א יְתִ֖ב וְסִפְרִ֥ין פְּתִֽיחוּ׃
As the sun was about to set, a deep sleep fell upon Abram, and a great dark dread descended upon him.
וַיְהִ֤י הַשֶּׁ֙מֶשׁ֙ לָב֔וֹא וְתַרְדֵּמָ֖ה נָפְלָ֣ה עַל־אַבְרָ֑ם וְהִנֵּ֥ה אֵימָ֛ה חֲשֵׁכָ֥ה גְדֹלָ֖ה נֹפֶ֥לֶת עָלָֽיו׃
Who is she that shines through like the dawn,
Beautiful as the moon,
Radiant as the sun
Awesome as bannered hosts?-a
מִי־זֹ֥את הַנִּשְׁקָפָ֖ה כְּמוֹ־שָׁ֑חַר יָפָ֣ה כַלְּבָנָ֗ה בָּרָה֙ כַּֽחַמָּ֔ה אֲיֻמָּ֖ה כַּנִּדְגָּלֽוֹת׃ {ס}
His rising-place is at one end of heaven,
and his circuit reaches the other;
nothing escapes his heat.
מִקְצֵ֤ה הַשָּׁמַ֨יִם ׀ מֽוֹצָא֗וֹ וּתְקוּפָת֥וֹ עַל־קְצוֹתָ֑ם וְאֵ֥ין נִ֝סְתָּ֗ר מֵחַמָּתֽוֹ׃
I walk about in sunless gloom;
I rise in the assembly and cry out.
קֹדֵ֣ר הִ֭לַּכְתִּי בְּלֹ֣א חַמָּ֑ה קַ֖מְתִּי בַקָּהָ֣ל אֲשַׁוֵּֽעַ׃
