ืชืืื ืชืืื ืขื ื' ืืืืื THOU SHALT BE PERFECT WITH THE LORD THY GOD โ walk before him whole-heartedly, put thy hope in Him and do not attempt to investigate the future, but whatever it may be that comes upon thee accept it whole-heartedly, and then thou shalt be with Him and become His portion (Sifrei Devarim 173:3).

ืืืืข ืฆืื A CUNNING HUNTER literally, understanding hunting โ understanding how to entrap and deceive his father with his mouth. He would ask him, โFather how should salt and straw be tithedโ? (Genesis Rabbah 63:10) (although he knew full well that these are not subject to the law of tithe). Consequently his father believed him to be very punctilious in observing the divine ordinances.

ืชื A PLAIN MAN โ not expert in all these things: as his heart was his mouth (his thoughts and his words tallied). One who is not ingenious in deceiving people is called ืชื plain, simple.

ืืคืื [THERE WAS HUNTING] IN HIS MOUTH โ Understand this as the Targum renders it: in Isaacโs mouth (i. e. Isaac ate the venison he brought home). But its Midrashic explanation is: there was hunting in Esauโs mouth, meaning that he used to entrap and deceive him by his words (Genesis Rabbah 63:10).

Alternatively, so great is the mitzva of circumcision that it is equal to all the mitzvot of the Torah, as it is stated at the giving of the Torah: โFor according to these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israelโ (Exodus 34:27), and โcovenantโ refers to circumcision. Alternatively, so great is the mitzva of circumcision that if not for circumcision heaven and earth would not have been established, as it is stated: โIf My covenant be not with day and night, I would not have appointed the ordinances of heaven and earthโ (Jeremiah 33:25), and the covenant that exists day and night is the covenant of circumcision, as it is always found on the personโs body.

It was stated that Rabbi แธคanina says: A constellation makes one wise and a constellation makes one wealthy, and there is a constellation for the Jewish people that influences them. Rabbi Yoแธฅanan said: There is no constellation for the Jewish people that influences them. The Jewish people are not subject to the influence of astrology. And Rabbi Yoแธฅanan follows his own reasoning, as Rabbi Yoแธฅanan said: From where is it derived that there is no constellation for the Jewish people? As it is stated: โThus said the Lord: Learn not the way of the nations, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the nations are dismayed at themโ (Jeremiah 10:2). The nations will be dismayed by them, but not the Jewish people.
