Donโt say, โHow has it happened that former times were better than these?โ For it is not wise of you to ask that question.

This comes to tell you that Jerubaal in his generation is worthy of being treated like Moses in his generation; Bedan in his generation is like Aaron in his generation; and Jephthah in his generation is like Samuel in his generation. This serves to teach you that even the lightest of the light, i.e., the least distinguished individual, once he has been appointed as a leader over the community, he must be treated like the greatest of the great, and all are required to heed him and obey his rulings.

And it further says: โAnd you shall come to the priests, the Levites, and to the judge who shall be in those daysโ (Deuteronomy 17:9). But can it enter your mind that a person can go to a judge that is not alive in his days? What, then, is the meaning of the phrase โin those daysโ? It teaches that you need to go only to the judge in oneโs days, i.e., he is authorized to judge and decide matters. And it also says: โDo not say: How was it that the former days were better than these? For it is not out of wisdom that you inquire concerning thisโ (Ecclesiastes 7:10). Instead, one must accept the rulings of the leaders of his generation.

The Gemara raises a further difficulty: But doesnโt Reish Lakish say: What is the meaning of that which is written: โThis is the book of the generations of Adam, in the day that God created manโ (Genesis 5:1)? Did Adam the first man have a book? Rather, the verse teaches that the Holy One, Blessed be He, showed Adam, the first man, every generation and its expositors, every generation and its Sages, and every generation and its leaders. When Adam arrived at the generation of Rabbi Akiva, he rejoiced in his Torah and was saddened by his death, as Rabbi Akiva was tortured and murdered. Adam said: โHow weighty also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of themโ (Psalms 139:17). It is evident from here that the Jews were destined to bear future generations from the beginning of time.
